why do canker sores hurt SO badly when they are just a tiny cut?

a regular scrape in your mouth hurts enough but these things are excruciating and take forever to heal. what’s their deal

The skin in the mouth is super thin, with a lot of nerves near the surface. In canker sores, the thin layer of skin is gone, leaving the nerves directly exposed.

Fyi if you get frequent canker sores try switching toothpaste to one without sodium laurel sulfate. For a lot of people that vastly reduces their frequency.
