Why do carbonated drinks give you that tingly feeling?

Always wondered because people say that it ‘tastes good’ and that I’ve been missing out. What exactly causes it and what is the appeal?

You may know that carbonated drinks are made by bubbling CO2 gas in them. When dissolved in water, it reacts and forms carbonic acid CH2O3. It tastes slightly sour and is partially responsible for the feeling.

At atmospheric pressure, carbonic acid doesn’t like to stay in water and it bubbles out, which is why you hear a *shhhh* when you open a can or bottle, and why there are bubbles in the drink. I believe that the tingle is caused by the carbonic acid and the CO2 gas escaping from solution as bubbles which you can feel on your tongue when they pop, and the more bubbles, the more you get that tingly feeling.
