Why do cars appear so much closer in the rear mirror than in the wing mirror?

I’n not sure if this goes for any type of car but for mine it seems like objects in the rear mirror appear a lot closer than they actually are.

The rear mirror is a convex mirror. It allows a larger field than of vision and hence they are used, even though the objects in them appear closer than they are.
