Why do cars appear so much closer in the rear mirror than in the wing mirror?

I’n not sure if this goes for any type of car but for mine it seems like objects in the rear mirror appear a lot closer than they actually are.

The side mirrors are slightly convex to provide a wider field of view. Wider field of view means that the image appears smaller than it actually is.
