Cats and dogs don’t necessarily need to sleep as much as they do. They just don’t have anything to do for a large parts of the day so they go to sleep. Doing so is advantageous because it preserves calories. This isn’t useful in modern times when animals are often overfed but a lot of domesticated animal behaviors predate domestication.
A person who only sleeps 7 to 8 hours a day may look at a dog or a cat and think it’s strange that they sleep so much but the normal human sleep cycle is not ideal. There’s a reason why a lot of cultures take naps or even have them built into their society, they’re good for you. They get you off your feet, allow you to be more productive during your waking hours because you weren’t always walking around half dead.
