First of all they are safe from a lot of predators, in nature this(the perch not the predator) would be a tree or cliff. This is why they also like sleeping in high places, windows sill, cat towers, etc.

They can also see prey/movement much easier and locate the source of sounds, since it can be dangerous and a waste of energy to investigate every sound by confronting it.

Cats, despite being predators themselves, are pretty small, so they are vulnerable to attacks of bigger predators.

Natural counter to that are trees and other high places where bigger animans have trouble getting to. Having high ground also grants better sight, so it’s easier to spot danger or dinner.

These two things combined made cats evolve in a way that they feel need to change height.
