Why do cats pupils look the way they do? Why aren’t they round like humans?

Predators often have vertical pupils, while herbivorous creatures often have horizontal pupils. I’m pulling this out of the dark recesses of my brain, but I remember reading that predators focus on a single prey animal at a time, while prey spends its time scanning from left to right to determine potential threats coming from any possible direction.

I can’t remember if links are permitted in the sub or I’d direct you to a UC Berkeley study from 2015 that has more info.
