: Why do ear piercings take so long to close over but other parts of the body close really quickly?

I’ve not had earrings in for years at a time in the past and the holes have still been as open as it was the last time I had earrings. Whereas I had a lip piercing that after a few days, seems to have almost completely closed up.

If you were to not put in earrings immediately after getting them pierced, they would close up. As the piercing heals, they basically heal around the earring, leaving a hole. You’re also generally instructed to turn earrings when the piercings are still healing, otherwise you risk your earlobes healing tightly with the earring inside instead of leaving a hole.
