Why do fire hydrants not freeze and burst in the winter? The water is theoretically above the freezing line, no?

Called a “dry charge system,” a remote valve is actioned at the port above ground. The system is charged 6 or more feet below the local frost line. Either 10″ or 12″ in diameter, a fire water main can deliver almost instantly to a reduced 4″ hose.
