Why do fizzy drinks make us need to go to the toilet faster than still drinks?
In: Biology
A lot of fizzy drinks are caffeinated. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, which can increase the speed of peristalsis, (the muscle contractions that move food through your bowel). It’s also a diuretic, which makes you need to pee. Two toilets for the price of one.
Also, many more people than think it are actually sensitive to caffeine and it *will* give you diarrhoea.
There’s nothing about fizz that does this. Most fizzy drinks, however, have alcohol or caffeine in them. Those two drugs are *diuretics* – drugs that make you need to urinate.
