Why do individuals sound terrible when they sing but a group of people sound good

Assuming we’re talking about an average person, they sound pretty bad when singing. But if a bunch of these terrible singers sing in a group, they won’t sound bad at all. Why?

When you talk, you hear your own voice through your head and through the air (it’s why you sound different in recording) so it’s harder to get the pitch right.

But when you get a group of singers, the slight difference in pitch creates a harmony, it’s like strumming all the strings on a guitar vs plucking one string.
