Why do Instagram “influencers” post products with the caption, “Comment ‘link’ and I’ll DM you the link”

This has to be the most infuriating pattern/trend.. Is it a trend? Why do people do it? If it was “Enter your email and I’ll send you the link”, that I can understand, because you’re joining a mailing list, but there isn’t such a thing with Insta DM’s are there?

The link they send you has their affiliate id attached to it (in the form of a bunch or gobbeldygook after the main portion of the URL), so they can be credited for their portion of driving customers to retailer/MLM.

They’ll be paid back in the form of cash money or product credit.

It’s called Engagement farming. the more comments they get the more it boosts them in the algorithm for have people interested and talking. They make more money and get bigger contracts for more products, forming a loop.

Overall it’s a scummy practice

You can’t put clickable links on Instagram posts. So they send you the link DM. They get a unique link from the company that lets the company know you came to the site because of them. That’s how they get paid.

It’s just like when you listen to podcasts or watch YouTube videos. In the commercials they’re like “go to bluechew.com and enter code LarryVsTheWorld for 10% off”. That code gives you a little discount but it’s really designed to show how many people are buying products specifically because that content creator brought it up.
