Why do modern tv’s struggle so much with vertical stripes

My Sony bravia tv has, apparently best in class motion processing but struggles massively with vertical lines in any scene. Think Venetian blinds, wood panelling etc

Why?

Do you have any motion interpolation features turned on? Repeating patterns like stripes or grids play havoc with those. If the camera moves approximately the same distance as (or a multiple of) the repetition interval of the pattern, the interpolator is going to have difficulty telling the difference between that and if the camera had moved by a different multiple, or not at all, when trying to draw an in-between frame.

Otherwise it might just be artifacting caused by the compression used on the source video.

Yes motion processing turned on. The higher the level of processing, the worse it gets.

Yeah I’m happy to turn it off, it’s just always struck me as odd that it does such a fantastic job of very complex organic scenes with little or no artefacts but fails miserably with a simple repeating pattern
