I think if we don’t call it petting, and think of it as parasite grooming/removal, then almost all creatures like it…

Sea turtles, sharks and large fish all frequent certain coves where the cleaner fish – shrimp and wrasses – comb over their nooks and crannies.

Large buffalo, elephants, and big cats in the Serengeti, allow birds to ride on their backs, picking ticks and mites from their ears, nose and hides…

The act of petting, triggers the same good feelings that prevents, lets say, a lion, from snacking on a bird picking at his gum line.
