Why do naps last 1 – 2 hours, but we can sleep for 8 hours straight at night?

I’ve just noticed, that when I take a nap, my body wakes myself up within 1 – 2 hours. This is probably true for everyone else too. But our bodies allow us to sleep for 8 hours at night. Why can’t our bodies nap for a full 8 hours without waking up? How does our body know this? How does our body differentiate between napping vs a nights sleep?

cannot nap- always wake up more tired and groggy. Worst feeling. Allergic to naps a thing?

For me the worst thing is when I go to bed bit earlier (10pm or so) in hopes of sleeping till morning but instead my brain decides to go for a nap instead. Waking up at midnight with no chance of falling asleep again.

Your body lets you sleep for 8 hours? A good streak for me is 5 without waking up.

I can nap for 15 to 20 minutes, it takes me about 1 or 2 minutes to get into it. I feel so much energy right after, good for the rest of the day

If i could give people some tips: Focus on your body relaxing, focus on your breathing and setup a timer for how long you want your nap to last so you don’t stress about it

I just woke up from a 4 hour nap… although i got drunk yesterday for the first time in years, there could be some correlation there.

I avoid naps as much as possible. I need to be extremely weary and exhausted to even consider a nap because naps never make me feel better, only worse. And I don’t sleep 8 hours at night, and I haven’t for a very very long time… Maybe almost 40 years. Not even kidding. The last time I slept thru the night I was a teenager. So I don’t even know how to think about your query. lol

So true. Even when I take a really long nap and feel like I slept away half the day, I look at the clock and it’s been 2 hrs max.
