Why do nearsighted people glasses when playing on a VR headset even though the screen is super close?

I have horrible nearsightedness. We are talking -5.00. I thought I wouldn’t need my glasses with the oculus since it’s screen is so close. When I put it on though I couldn’t see anything and needed my glasses. Why do people still need their glasses. The screen cannot be more than a few inches out.

The VR headsets have lenses already to correct for the fact that the screen is so close. They are essentially strong reading glasses. So while you might be able to focus on something a few inches away without glasses you will not be able to do so while reading strong reading glasses.

If the vr goggle made it look normal to someone with very poor eyesight it would be like some with no eye problems using your glasses. Ie. It would be very blurry and they wouldn’t be able to see anything. That said apparently there are vr headsets that have perscription lenses for peopel with eye problems.
