Why do nearsighted people still need to wear glasses in VR if the distance is artificial?

I got VR gear for free when I bought my s6 along time ago. It had a focus knob that allowed me to move my phone away from the lenses, so I was able to use it with my glasses. Was a little disappointed that didn’t translate over to new HMD.
