Why do normally quiet things like footsteps or creaking floorboards sound louder at night?

Less ambient noise at night.
It’s like how it’s hard to see the stars while you’re in a city, but you can see them clearly in the country. There’s less light pollution droning the stars out. Works the same with noise pollution.
