Why do office chairs squeak, and what does WD40 exactly do to silence them?

WD40 provides temporary lubrication, so it cuts down on the friction between whatever surfaces are squeaking. The squeaking could be from any number of parts (springs, hinges, or anything that rubs). WD40 though is really not the best and likely won’t keep stuff from squeaking for long. It evaporates quickly and isn’t really designed to lubricate. Silicone, graphite, or oil based lubricants will last longer.

WD40 is just a lubricant . The squeaking is caused by friction of two surfaces rubbing up against each other.

WD40 just reduces the friction and allows for freer movement, but also eliminates the squeak.
