In addition to muscle strain from keeping them open for long periods of time, eyes can also burn when you are tired or sleep deprived from lack of lubrication. Dry tired eyes can be quite burny. It is your eyeballs saying to you “please give me a break!”

Your eyes actually have muscles in and around them. This is why you feel strain when you dart your eyes around repeatedly or look too far in one direction. You’re stretching them out!

Like all muscles, eyes need rest so all their microscopic tears can heal. Until then, you’re going to feel the burn!
