The structure of our neck and musculature make it easier for our head to pitch forward than back. Think if it this way, our range of motion forward is also much further than back before encountering resistance…

Your head’s center of gravity is slightly in front of where it connects to your spine. When you fall asleep your muscles relax and the muscles that hold your head upright are predominantly in the back of your neck pulling the back of your head downward (and thus your face upward). When your muscles relax, your head will follow its center of gravity, whether that’s rolling to the side or falling forward/backward depending on your position.
