why do our tastebuds lessen when we get older?

30M here – my tastebuds aren’t the same comparing to my days back in elementary/middle school. Why?

I once heard that as children you need as much energy as possible. Sugar is filled with energy, so tastes phenomenal to children. This effect is lessened as you grow older, allowing flavours other than sugar to be more pronounced.
