Why do people feel the urge to bite their nails even if they’re hurting themselves?

I bite my nails. Sometimes I’m hurt, but I still want to bite them. How come?

I have never had this urge and always wondered why so many people bite their nails. I even tried it once or twice just to see what the fuss was about and it did nothing for me.
