They don’t. There’s a video from maybe 15 years ago where a guy pays by check using increasingly outlandish signatures and has no problem until he “buys” several large screen TVs and signs the checks “Do Not Cash”.

A signature is an indication of intent – it is not ID.

They’re not THAT easily forged; you need to have a copy of one, namely, and usually we don’t use signatures entirely willy nilly *and* they’re usually in addition to something else.

Also: Lots of the time you *can’t* just derive it from their name (some people do only part of their name, some people do first or last name or both, and then there’s Randal Munroe who has a damn stick figure in his signature).
