Why do people go insane when lost in the jungle?

I seen movies and heard true stories of people who were lost in the Amazon rainforest and they apparently experience insanity episodes and hallucinations without even taking drugs or eating weird stuff so what gives?

Spose the repetition of the jungle and stress of being lost combined with starvation and dehydration sends you mad

It’s really easy to giver yourself hallucinations. Just close off your senses. If you can’t see and hear, your brain very quickly tries to make sense of the silence by inventing interpretations for the nothingness.

Now imagine being lost in a place where you have no sense of reference. It’s all just green. There’s noise all around but nothing you recognise. You’re under extreme stress because you’re alone, you’re isolated, you’re hungry, you’re thirsty, you’re lost and you have no idea if you’re going to make it out.

That is about as far from ideal as you can get for a social creature that evolved to use his brain to be in control of his environment rather than completely adrift.

In that kind of situation, your brain is all over the place trying to make sense of things. Your imagination is in overdrive trying to contextualise things you have no context for.
