I see this constantly in certain European counties, and mostly in villages, but still, why? Is it ascetic, or is there an actual purpose for these type of roofs?

Sod roofs are waterproof, heavy (which is good for a log house), reasonably good insulators, and made of materials that are free. All of those things make them a pretty good choice for rural areas in cold climates.
