Why do people pull funny faces when concentrating?

Both my old teaching assistant and CEO of my company pulled funny faces when concentrating.

When concentrating on drawing art, my old teacher would bite her tongue. The CEO of my company also pulled funny faces when it comes to ideation; creating new ideas.

I saw her reflection on a computer screen doing it.

Why do many ladies tend to pull funny faces when concentrating?

The only common denominator I have observed is that they are both females, ladies.

Do ladies tend to pull funny faces when concentrating and alone? Has anyone else observed this?

I’m a 50 year old man, and I tend to make pretty funny faces when concentrating. I see it a lot in other people, not just women. Check out the faces guitarists make when they’re playing a solo, it’s pretty funny!

Yes! Woman of 50 here, following this post as I always make funny faces when concentrating, especially with my tongue out, and one eye winking. God knows why, but this is a common facial expression used in cartoons… so obviously I’m not the only one doing it. Question is – WHY!?!?

Nothing to do with gender, it’s an extremely common thing to do! See this article (and the attached study) for more info: https://www.newscientist.com/lastword/mg25333781-200-why-does-sticking-my-tongue-out-seem-to-help-me-concentrate/

Your sample is perhaps a little – sparse.

I (male) frown when I’m concentrating. I’ve been asked many times, at school and since, what was puzzling me, when the actuality was that I was just conentrating hard on what was being said.
