Why do photographs when emailed from a iPhone to a computer come out sideways many times?

When you rotate a photo on a smartphone, it doesn’t necessarily actually rotate the photo. It just adds a little bit of data to the file that says “when you show this photo, rotate it 90 degrees” for instance. However, not all programs understand this additional information, so they show the original unrotated photo.
