Sleep and rest allows our body to rejuvenate, our eyes also need rest. When you don’t get enough sleep or over strain your eyes, you are focusing to keep your eyes open, nerves and blood vessels are strained in that area, more blood flows to the tiny vessels on your eyes, these blood vessels become prominent and they appear as visible red lines.

That’s why those who work a lot straining their eyes or have to stare at a screen for long are asked to take a break once in a while, or use a compress on your eye lids. Even warming your palms by rubbing them together and placing them gently on top of your eyelids will relax your eyes.

Staring at a computer causes you to blink less subconsciously, which leads to less tear output and thus drier eyes. This dryness can led to redness and swelling.
