Asking as I am currently in Mexico in the thick of it. They don’t seem to follow any logic. 530am one day, 230am the next, sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes not ( although always just before sunrise ). I’ve learned the ones around here are somewhat feral although people apparently lay claim to ownership. What are they trying to accomplish, and is it just mass hysteria that gets them all going at once?

Same reason as other birds make noise – to let other roosters within ear range know that this is their territory, to let nearby females know that they’re ready to mate, and to communicate other vital pieces of information like “Yo there’s tasty bugs over here” or “Look out, I saw a hawk.”
Roosters have internal biological clocks synced to sunrise – they crow in the morning as a response to the changing light levels, signaling the start of a new day.
However, they may also crow at other times of the day / night for various reasons (albeit the trigger is not immediately obvious or may only be perceived). These include sensing threat / danger and sending a warning to other chooks, breeding season and hormonal changes, as well as asserting their dominance.

Same reason dogs bark in the middle of the night. Something alarmed them. They sleep pretty heavily, but in a city there are lots of things to wake them up. On a farm they usually sleep through the night.
Mine is just doing à crowing contest with every other rooster in a 2km radius who themselves are doing a crowing contest on a 2km radius
My brother had a rooster and he would crow all night, every night starting around 2 am. He would do it about every 15 minutes right by the house not by the chicken coop. It was a really quiet area. There were a few cats in the area but I don’t think they were setting him off every 15 minutes. My brother sold him so he could sleep
Why do you talk or communicate for seemingly no reason? It’s how they communicate dude
I was camping in AZ last weekend. Wild Donkeys were hee-hawing at 2:30am for no apparent reason every night. Sometimes 3:30am. I couldn’t help but laugh, they were sooooo loud! They were everywhere 🙂
They’re screaming “who wants some of this cock!?” Both in a threatening way and sexual way to whatever can hear it
