Probably because if we were able to sneeze hard enough to remove the irritant the first time, we’d rip our sinuses to shreds.

I regularly and violently sneeze between 10 to 15 times. I have to watch how I stand when it is happening so I don’t hurt my back. It often gets triggered by bright sunlight.
I tell people to wait until I finish sneezing to say “bless you”, partially because my sneezing fits can last for 2 minutes, and sometimes if I’m interrupted I can’t finish sneezing and that’s even more annoying
When I was a kid, my parents would say “God bless you” on the first, “God bless you that’s all you get” on the second, and everybody in my family still sneeze exactly twice every time.🤷

In our family, when someone sneezes and farts at the same time, we call it a “double-double.”
