Why do some dump trucks say “Do not push” on the back?

Who would think it’s a good idea to do that? Was there ever a time when it was a good idea?

Because they don’t want people to push them.

Dump truck have a tendency to go places that don’t have finished roads and then massively change weight. So it’s not uncommon to go into a muddy lot, get loaded up with dirt and sink into the mud so badly that you can’t move (or empty yourself of dirt and discover that your rear wheels no longer have enough grip to push you out). Now, you also tend to have a lot of heavy equipment at these places, so the ‘easy’ solution often appears to be to just give the truck a little ‘bump’ with your loader to get it out if its rut so it can drive away. This tends to be bad for the truck because the ‘dump’ part of the dump truck isn’t made to dealing with those kinds of loads and doesn’t react well.
