why do some mirrors make you appear wide, and why do some make you appear thinner? I understand how funhouse mirrors distort your reflection, but even flat mirrors can show varied reflections

A truly flat mirror will not give a distorted reflection. It only takes a small curve to make your reflection seem noticeably different.
