why do some TV shows have shaky camera shots and what’s the reason behind them?

For example, I’m watching season 1 of The Americans and there’s a lot of it in the dialogue between two of the main characters. I also remember seeing it a lot on Law & Order episodes.

It’s supposed to make it look documentary-ish, like they’re recording the stuff live as it happens rather than scripted and rehearsed. More ‘real’.
