Can you give some examples? None of the athletes I can think of have noticeably big neck muscles.

Steroids? That’s the factor when was in high school and a number of kids bulked up in relatively short time frames. Some had disproportionate sized necks. The soccer kids tended not to use steroids and had a more natural athletic build.

What kind of muscle groups you develop depends on the sport you do, some athletes won’t have need for very large neck muscles while others do. For example football players and other contact sport players benefit from neck muscles

If you mean the trapezius muscle specificly, lots of sports benefit from this like swimming and rowing.
