Tears taste salty because they are roughly 1% salt in addition to other electrolytes. And since our tongue functions as a chemical detector for nutrients and minerals we need to live, we both crave and can detect fine amounts of this salinity. The function of this salinity in tears is to create a hostile environment for bacteria and microbes to keep your eye clean.

Tears taste salty because they have salt in them. Most of your bodily fluids have some amount of salt in them.
