There are gingival fibers in your mouth that try to pull your teeth into place. For all they know, the teeth being out of place is *wrong*, so the fibers will try to pull them back. In cases where the fibers are likely to pull your teeth back out of place, your orthodontist can perform a [fiberotomy](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiberotomy) to sever the gingival fibers and keep them from pulling on your teeth.
