Pregnancy is a chemical battlefield, the foetus has a single chance to be born so is demanding every resource that the mother has in order to be born and to be as big and healthy as possible and releases chemicals to make that happen. The mother while it wants a healthy baby also wants to survive and if this pregnancy doesn’t work they can have another one later, so limit the supplies going to the foetus, by releasing a different set of chemicals. This war of chemicals can impact the brain function of the mother.
