Why do things moving in the periphery of my vision seem to be moving slower than they actually are?

For example, when brushing my teeth, there are mirrors on either side of me, as well as the big one in front of me. In the side mirrors, my hand seems be lagging behind the movement in front of me.

Is this true? I’ve never noticed in my mirrors. What if your whole body moved is it the same?
