Why do tides affect some areas more than others?

Some areas such as Brittany or some of Spains coast has incredible difference between high and low tide while some places have close to zero difference, why is that?
The same is for some river such as the Thames that only have some parts of the river being affected by the tide but not other parts.

The geography of the area plays a big role.

If there is a narrow, shallow inlet then the water will go way out at low tide as an example. A wider and deeper inlet will probably see less drastic changes.
