Every year, the weather goes through a pattern according to the seasons. Some seasons, theres a lot of sun and rain. The trees grow a lot, others the trees don’t get enough to grow much.

Periods of faster growth makes a different color as periods of slow growth. The slow growth period makes a very thin band of color, and can be used as a marker for one ring. And since in general, there’s one summer and one winter in a year, we can count how many of these winter bands to determine how many years the tree has grown in.
