Because most people don’t eat a balanced diet. Specifically, eating enough leafy green vegetables or nuts like almonds. You don’t need a lot, but you need to make a conscious decision to include them in your diet, which can be hard if you’re stuffing yourself with chips and sodas

Because magnesium is typically in stuff that is perishable, usually bland, and not traditional or modern food staples. It’s one of the rare supplements that many dieticians and sports medicine/trainers actually recommend people take because of how rarely we get it in our diet and the absolutely insane number of functions it is vital in within the body. Basically every aspect of the human condition relies on magnesium in some way, from muscle growth to DNA repair to signalling pathways. You need magnesium to make ATP which is how we get energy.

It should be noted that certain magnesium supplements are much more bio-available than others, with ones like Magnesium Taurate being more so. So which type you get matters. I’m not a trainer but I do tell anyone who asks me for advice to take a magnesium supplement. Just be aware it’s the main ingredient in many laxatives so it can have that affect on you.
