why do we enjoy sleeping so much

I remember reading somewhere, in the context of a related “why do we sleep?” question, that some scientists ponder if sleep is our natural evolutionary state, and it’s “why do we wake up” that is the correct question, with obvious answers in terms of getting resources, continuing our lineage, etc.
I find this perspective is very interesting and it would also answer your question with “because it’s our natural state”.
It would also mean that cats are near the peak of evolutionary perfection. (duh)
