also how is it different from when we cry? i kind of have an idea that when it comes to colds, having a runny nose is like the body’s way of removing viruses or something (correct me if i’m wrong). but i can’t connect how having a runny nose would help if we eat something spicy or when we start crying

When it’s cold, extra mucus prevents the nose from drying out. Cold air becomes very dry when it’ warmed up, sucking moisture out of our tissues.
When noxius chemicals enter our nose, whether it’s from spicy food, raw onions or tear gas, extra mucus helps clearing out the chemicals from our noses.
Our eyes drain into our noses, so whenever we cry, whether from sadness, happiness, onions or tear gas, our noses also go all runny.
