Why do we need lips? Why fon’t we just have normal skin around our mouth?

There are no hair follicles or sweat glands on our lips, and the skin is generally thinner, but we actually don’t know the reason they’ve evolved this way. My theory is that it has something to do with speech, because I don’t think we could communicate as effectively with harder, thicker skin around our mouths.

Edit: sweat not swear
