oo i know this one!
when your brain is awake/you’re conscious you’re in a certain brain state and the electricity in your brain is going at a certain frequency . it’s not that you need to be conscious, it’s that your brain needs those states to get rest. it takes about 3ish hours (i think don’t quote me on that. i’m too lazy to google but it’s for sure several hours) to go through all those brain states and then back out through reverse order. in a full night you do that about 3 times.

Your brain needs downtime to process what you learned/did when you were awake to form long term memories. It also needs rest and it takes more energy to make you conscious.
