I’ll rephrase that: **Why are we taught to hold our mouth shut when in pain/shock?**
It is a learnt behaviour in some cultures, and only women do it.
**It originates from rape culture, from men physically or by threats stopping girls and women from crying for help.**

It’s not instinctive we’re copying what we’ve seen in others, whether that’s in person or in movies. It’s to stop the sound of screaming and just became a habit even when we don’t scream. But similar to how in different cultures they don’t all say “ahh!” or “ouch!” when they hit their foot because they were taught different words. Some cultures bite their lip or they let out the scream or shock sound
