I’m not sure if there are any other reasons, but looking in a certain direction when thinking often helps to “activate” that side of the brain. People often glance to the left when being asked questions because the left side of the brain handles intellectual things including memory recall.

Ask yourself why might it be evolutionarily advantageous to look around while thinking. Well, if you are trying to make a primitive arrow for example as early humans did, thinking about the construction/assembly and looking around for suitable sticks and sharp stones would have been advantageous. Looking around allows you to observe physical options you might have to solve whatever you are thinking of.

It communicates to others that you are thinking.

It keeps distracting stimuli away.

It’s a way to emotionally distance from another person, because the emotions can disrupt the thinking
