Ask yourself why might it be evolutionarily advantageous to look around while thinking. Well, if you are trying to make a primitive arrow for example as early humans did, thinking about the construction/assembly and looking around for suitable sticks and sharp stones would have been advantageous. Looking around allows you to observe physical options you might have to solve whatever you are thinking of.
