Why do we need greasy moisturizers to hydrate our skin? Isn’t water enough?

Your skin is waterproof because of skin oils. Water on its own simply beads up and rolls off your skin, more or less. Soap can actually dissolve the oils which dries your skin out – yes, *washing* your skin can *dry* it!

Moisturizers and lotions and whatnot serve the same purpose as skin oils. “Oil and water don’t mix”, right? So water doesn’t do anything to moisturize your skin.
